Sawyer Massey

The Sawyer-Massey Co. was formed in 1892 at Hamilton, Ontario (Canada) when three members of the Massey family bought a stake in the long-established firm of L.D. Sawyer Co. In the early 1900s Sawyer-Massey built a range of steam portable and traction engines for Canadian farmers, but by 1910 they were also experimenting with gas tractor design. However, the Massey family were unhappy with the new direction that the comapny was headed in, and they withdrew their financial backing at around this time, although the Sawyer-Massey name was still used on products built by the company. The first Sawyer-Massey tractor was the 22-45, and this paved the way for a complete range of tractors from the 11-22 up to the 27-50 (as the 22-45 was later re-rated). The company continued to produce tractors and other equipment into the 1920s.
